Councilman Jose Huizar’s Statement About Eagle Rock

In Eagle Rock, Highland Park, and Glassell Park, as in all CD14 communities, Councilmember Huizar has prioritized park space and thoroughfare improvements with the goal of enhancing our public green space, improving traffic safety, adding bike lanes, increasing foot traffic for local businesses, and encouraging community building. Working with local community groups and organizations, those efforts have certainly paid off: Since Councilmember Huizar took office, ‘Part I’ Crime in Highland Park is down 37% and violent crime is down nearly 49%! York Boulevard in Eagle Rock was recently named the ‘Coolest Street in L.A.’ by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, and the City of Eagle Rock itself was recently named the 2nd hottest neighborhood in the entire country by Redfin (on the largest and most important real estate websites)!

Los Angeles Public Library—Eagle Rock Branch

In April 1911, Eagle Rock voters decided to incorporate as an independent city and in early 1914 a group of citizens organized to secure a library for the community. Previously, Anna Swan had maintained a small County Library in her dry goods store on Colorado Boulevard.  In February 1971, the Library suffered structural damage making it unsafe for continued use. Given the potential cost of repairs, as well as the need for more space, parking, and handicapped access, a new library was deemed to be the best solution. The current building on Caspar Avenue was opened and dedicated on October 3, 1981. The old building on the original site on Colorado Boulevard was later fully renovated, and is now the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock.  All branch libraries provide free access to computer workstations which are connected to the Los Angeles Public Library's information network. In addition to providing Internet access, these workstations also enable the public to search the Los Angeles Public Library’s many electronic resources—including the online catalog, subscription databases, word processing, language learning, literacy, and a large historic document and photograph collection.

All branches of the Lose Angeles Public Library feature:

In addition, the Eagle Rock branch also has:

The Hollywood Bowl

Located just a few miles away from our campus, The Hollywood Bowl is many wonderful things all rolled into one:

  • An extremely popular destination for Solheim residents with planned trips

  • Pollstar Magazine's “Best Major Outdoor Venue” for the 12th consecutive year!

  • The largest natural outdoor amphitheater in the United States

  • The mecca for summer concerts in Southern California

  • The summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the permanent home to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra

  • A public park with 14 different picnic grounds

  • The perfect place for small and large groups of music lovers to enjoy a night of outstanding music under the stars

Descanso Gardens

Another frequent destination for planned trips for Solheim residents, Descanso Gardens is truly an “urban retreat” of rare year-round natural beauty, internationally renowned botanical collections, and spectacular seasonal horticultural displays. Visit for a stroll, a concert, or a class… there are many ways to explore and enjoy this treasure!

Levitt Pavillion Pasadena

Used frequently for residents’ summer outings, Levitt Pavilion Pasadena sits in historic ‘Memorial Park’ in Pasadena. Originally known as ‘Library Park’ in honor of Pasadena’s first library (a Romanesque stone building that was constructed onsite in 1890), this five-acre park is one of the earliest established in the city. Created in 1902 along with nearby ‘Central Park,’ the triangular green space is bordered to the east by a railroad track that was completed in 1887, and on the west by Raymond Avenue. The library itself was damaged by an earthquake in 1933, and ultimately dismantled in 1954—though the entrance arch was preserved and still stands at the northwest corner of the park. In 1983, Memorial Park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Civic Center Historic District. The bandshell, now known as the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena, was built in 1930 and renovated in 2002, with a grant from the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation.
