Spring Cleaning for Seniors!
Now that spring is in full bloom, spring cleaning often becomes a way to mark the season. Originally, spring cleaning meant scrubbing every surface of the house to remove the dark, sooty grime that built up from using kerosene lamps and wood burning stoves throughout the winter months.
At Solheim Lutheran Home, our seniors aren’t quite old enough to remember those days, but they do have some tips if you are preparing to help your older loved one get their place clean and in order this spring:
Tips to help a senior with spring cleaning:
Make A List
Sit down with your senior loved one and make a list of everything that needs to get done. From cleaning out the refrigerator to scrubbing the floors to disposing expired medications, a list will keep you on track.
Just like any other appointment, make your senior loved one a priority and commit to helping them with their cleaning by making time in your busy schedule.
Ask For Help
When cleaning your loved ones home, the more the merrier! Ask other family members to help clean while spending time with your loved one. If the cleaning seems overwhelming, hire a professional to take care of some of the tasks for you.
Let Your Senior Loved One Help
No matter how much or how little your senior loved one can help, let them feel useful by giving them tasks that they can accomplish. Let them polish silverware or organize papers while you take care of the rest of the house.
Organize, Then Clean
Sometimes seniors have accumulated a lifetime of belongings, which makes their home feel cluttered. Try to go through the belongings first and organize or get rid of things, then do the cleaning.
Make It Fun
We know – cleaning isn’t always something to look forward to. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make it enjoyable, especially if you consider your time cleaning as time well spent with your loved one. As you clean and organize, talk about old memories, share snacks or meals and enjoy each other’s company.
During spring cleaning you might find that your loved one is living in conditions that are detrimental to their health or well-being. If so, it might be time to look into a senior retirement community.
